Dr. Athyal goes to Unite for Sight Conference

Dear all,

I just returned from the Unite for Sight International 5th Annual Health Conference at Yale University.  There were about 2,200 participants from all 50 states and 55 countries.  The keynote speakers included Allan Rosenfield from Columbia, Jim Yong Kim from Harvard (Partners in Health director with Paul Farmer) and the well-known Drs. Jeffrey & Sonia Sachs.  Dr. Kim stressed the growing need to explore global health delivery systems.  Dr. Sachs spoke about global economics.  I had the unique privilege of meeting with him briefly.  He has a new book out entitled "Common Wealth".

I had the opportunity to present a talk on our work in Honduras, particularly focusing on the Slow Sand Filter project.  I presented to a very active audience with many questions.  I think our program is doing some very unique work with more of an emphasis in community development and preventive medicine.   Nancy Chin also presented on her departments work in Tibet.  I also met with Amanda Coyle, who is a NP at the UofR.  She travelled with our team to Honduras in 2006.

Contact me if you're interested in hearing more.  I would encourage anyone to attend and present at this conference next year!  I think people should hear about the great work we are doing in Honduras.

Cheers,

Vidu
